‘The only constant in life is change’ and the changes as well within as outside companies and organisations are going faster than ever before. That’s a fact of life, but it also makes that a lot of people are tired and fed-up with another organisational (change) project or program..
So the challenge to really engage people is bigger than ever!
Herewith 4 tips what you can do when you encounter resistance
in your project, program or organisation:
1. Check your own inner state regarding your project or program
a. Do you yourself feel and radiate energy for it?
b. Are you doing what you say and say what you do?
c. Do you see the situation as it really is? (Ask others..)
If the answer to one of the above questions is no. Then there is work to do to change your own state, if you still want to realise this project or program..
2. In case you are not the final responsible person in your organisation for this project or program, then: What is the inner state of this person regarding to your project or program?
a. Does (s)he radiates energy for it?
b. Is (s)he doing what (s)he says and says what (s)he does?
c. Does (s)he sees the situation as it really is?
If one of the answers is no, explain your concerns, feeling and your needs to him/her. Since a change
will not last, if the main responsible figure does not really goes for it and/or not shows appropriate
example behaviour.
3. Did you find out the real (deeper) reason for the resistance?
a. Did you make time to talk to the person(s) and ask them 5x Why?
b. Did you listen open to their answers and seriously follow up?
c. And in complex cases, especially when patterns keep repeating: Did you discover systemic reasons for this
resistance, f.e. with organisational constellations? Ask yourself: Where is this resistance a solution for?
4. Did you communicate properly?
a. Are you clear and open about your real intention?
b. Is the Why? What? and How? clear to all stakeholders
c. Did you use the right words for the person(s) you are communicating to?
d. Did you communicate in a non-judgemental way?
Because if you did not, people may go in defence-mode.
And naturally, all of the above is valid in any ‘organisation’ or relationship..
